Disney/Pixar has a Winner with Cars 3

I have to admit, as much as I love Disney Pixar films, I wasn’t all that enthusiastic when I heard they were making a 3rd Cars movie. I was a huge fan of the 1st one, but I was on the fence about the 2nd one. The trailer of the 3rd got me interested again and now I have confirmation as to why. Cars 3 has managed to reignite this series with a wonderful story, tons of action, and animation like I have never seen done before in any other Disney Pixar film. They have brought back the excitement with this one and children of all ages will definitely enjoy seeing Lightning McQueen back on the big screen. I went with my husband and 2 teenage sons and they all enjoyed it as much as I did. We all really appreciated that they went back to the roots of the original film for this one. It gave the film a nostalgic but very refreshing feel. The introduction of some new characters along with the old standbys gives everyone from first-timers and fans of the 1st movie something to relate to and cheer on. I won’t give any of the plot away because I hate when I go to a movie knowing most of what is going to happen. I will say this, if you have the opportunity to see this film in 3D, do it! I have never been a fan of movies in 3D, but if they all look as stunning as this one does, then I will forever be a convert.

Cars 3 is fresh, fun, exciting and will have you cheering out loud!
It has a running time of 1hr and 49mins and carries a “true” G rating.

My review of Arrival

Hey, Everybody! I haven’t been blogging about the movies like I should, but I a few reviews coming up this week. If you have read any of my other reviews, then you have probably figured out that I rarely see any movie when it first comes out. In fact, I am lucky if I see a movie within the first. Okay, I’m not really that bad, but it does take me a minute. Anyway, I checked out Arrival last weekend and I wasn’t disappointed. I was drawn to this film just from the release date. It came out on November 11th and that 1111 happens to be a very special number to me. I won’t go into all that. Anyway, I found this movie to be, AMAZING! Amy Adams does a phenomenal job as Dr. Louise Banks, a linguist brought in by the government to help decode an alien language when they unexpectedly arrive on Earth. As I was watching this movie, I remember hoping that I would get it. That the wonderful symbolism in this film would not escape me. Luckily, that didn’t happen. I found myself going through a range of emotions watching this movie. Happiness, sadness, and a general sense of being in awe. It is my practice not to reveal too much in my reviews because my hope is that you will watch these movies yourself. I will end it like this. If you love good movies, watch Arrival. If you appreciate movies that take you deeper, watch Arrival. If you like movies that stay with you a few days after you see them, then by all means, watch Arrival. This movie is suitable for ages 13 and up, but the younger set might not be able to get the true gist of all that is going on.

Arrival has a running time of 1 hr and 56 mins. And is rated PG-13

Queen of Katwe- My review

Let me start out by saying, I am so glad this movie was made. It isn’t a Black movie or a girl’s movie. It is simply a great movie that in my opinion, everyone should see. I got so much inspiration from it. I took my 2 youngest sons to see it with me. They are homeschooled, so there were no other children in the audience. I was the only one that noticed that. I figured that watching movies like this would not only spark them to start playing chess again. But would inspire them to keep trying to go after their passions whatever they may be. I also give them writing assignments after watching certain movies to make sure they paid attention. No problem there. Queen of Katwe had them captivated from the very beginning. The entire cast was amazing! The beautiful young actress, Madina Nalwanga did a magnificent job playing the lead character, Phiona. I instantly fell in love with all of the children and was trying to figure a way to take my sons to Uganda to play chess. Yeah, good movies do that to me. David Oyelowo is heart-warming as the chess coach who discovers that the shy girl who wanders into his class one day, might actually be a chess prodigy. Lupita N’yongo shines as the very strong and determined mother to Phiona, Brian, Night and Richard. You should know by now that I don’t tell parts of the movie because I hate when you read a review and they basically give you an entire synopsis on the movie. I will say this. GO SEE THIS MOVIE! Take your children to see this movie. Take your parents, take your friends, team mates, co-workers, whoever. Just take them! I am so glad that Disney brought this wonderful story to the big screen.

Queen of Katwe is rated PG and has a running time of 2hours and 4minutes

My Magnificent 7 Movie Review

My brother and I decided to take our mother on a “date”. It had been quite a while since it was just the 3 of us. Life gets so busy. And, with my brother and I both having spouses, grown children, teenagers and pre-teens, we stay on the go. We decided to take a break out of our hectic lives and take our mom to check the Magnificent 7. She is a long-time fan of Westerns and she loves Denzel Washington. Then again, who doesn’t love Denzel? I, on the other hand, am not a big fan of Westerns. I have a few that I like. Silverado and Tombstone, but that’s it. So, I wasn’t as interested in seeing it. But, I too am a fan of Denzel and I also wanted to see what the phenomenal director, Antoine Fuqua was going to do with this remake. I wasn’t surprised that the movie was excellent. My mother remembers the original with Yul Brynner and she really enjoyed this one. I think maybe even more than the first one. The one thing I noticed about this movie is that it didn’t waste any time. There were no lulls. It started off with a bang and ended with one. There were light-hearted moments and some moments that made us laugh. One scene,( I won’t spoil it for you) had me almost cheer out loud. I don’t get the chance to see too many movies in the theater, but I am glad I went to see this one. If you get the chance to see it. Please do. Being a writer/actor myself, I am always looking at sets, at the movements the actors make, and how scenes are set up. However, with this movie I was so engrossed in the story being told that I just let myself be whisked away for 2 hours and 13 mins. My 14 and 12-year-olds want to see the movie and I had to see if I felt they could watch it. There really wasn’t anything in the movie that they haven’t seen already as far as the gunplay, the arrows and the occassional axe. But, you might want to leave children under 12 at home. Not many curse words (a few in Spanish) and thankfully not as much gratuitous blood spatters as I expected. It is violent though. It’s a Western. Have you ever seen a non-violent Western? Than being said. If you enjoy a great Western or just very well acted movies, you will enjoy The Magnificent 7.

PG-13 Starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Haley Bennett,Vincent D’Onofrio, Peter Sarsgaard, Lee Byung Hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Martin Sensmeier Running Time: 2h 13mins

Empire review(S2 Ep.16)

Empire took crazy to the top floor, last night. I’m talking penthouse level, you hear me? So, Andre thinks he is showing up his dad by bring home Luscious’ mom from the group home she’s been living in for the past several decades. Turns out she didn’t shoot herself because there weren’t any bullets in the gun. Great! But, *thinking to myself* how did little Dwight Walker get his mama put away all by himself? But,anyway. Mama walks in, Luscious is beyond shocked and the rest of the family is strangely calm,in my opinion. But I guess when you come from a family as dysfunctional as that one, nothing really surprises them anymore. Thirsty,Luscious’ henchman makes the annoying reporter, Harper Scott disappear. (I was expecting that one.) Rhonda.  Andre’s wife figured out that Anika was the one that pushed her down the stairs and caused her to lose her baby. I knew those red bottomed shoes would come back and tell on her. Why would you wear your Christian Louboutin’s to break into a house anyway? Who know? Maybe they were her only comfy flats. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Jamal has a new “DL” lover,(D-Major) that came to light in a scene that was way to hot for Prime time. Hey! I’m old school. I didn’t need to see all that manly, sweaty, sexy rough housing and stuff. Moving on. Hakeem is still showing his insecurities when it comes to romance. He was giving Tiana the serious, “I want you” look after their rehearsal for the ASA awards. His fiancee, Laura is not too happy he will be working so closely with her again. Luscious has a tender moment with his mom when they share a song they used to play back in the day. He continuously corrects her  when she calls him, Dwight. He ends up using his mom’s song for the big Lyon’s family reunion song. Which is actually about the best song I have heard all season. Some other stuff happened with Cookie’s sisters, but not enough to really mention so I am sticking to the juicy stuff.

So we get through all that and Luscious comes home to find that his mama(who said she was no longer sick) is actually still several sandwiches shy of a picnic and about as stable as a one legged table on an ice cube. Luscious sees that she has baked about 12 cakes. She has dismissed the maid and she is holding a rather large knife and making Luscious, eat the cake! (Did you just read that as Ike Turner?) I know you did. She goes on to tell him how he ruined her life and how she should have killed him long ago. It is probably the first time Luscious really looks terrified. ( I was kinda scared myself) The episodes end with Luscious stuffing his mouth with cake and me wondering how Luscious will get rid of his mom. Will he poison her? Will he get Anika to do a repeat stair pushing performance? Or will he conveniently leave a gun near her?(Fully loaded this time) Only a few episodes left. Stay tuned.

I didn’t forget about the Captain America:Civil War review. I just had to talk about this one today.

My week in tv

Okay,in my last post I kinda ripped Empire.I said the show had become boring and the plots predictable. On a positive note,I did say I hoped that they got it together, and brought back the excitement that catapulted them to the top. Well, let’s just say that the last two episodes have brought back a bit of the Season 1 fire. For this week’s episode tease,  we see a woman being brought in to see Luscious. We now know that this woman is his mother, who by Luscious’ own account shot herself in the head. Not sure how she survived, but I am anxious to see the outcome.  Oh, and by the way I am still not digging the music. No shade thrown to Timbaland (who I think is amazing). It can’t be easy coming up with a soundtrack every week. It’s just not hitting the MP3 download status of the 1st Season.

Moving on.

Did you check out last week’s extremely touching episode of Chicago Fire? (S4 Ep.20 The Last one for Mom) I wondered about doing a review of it since I work on the show as a core background extra. But, I decided to go ahead and it, since I watch it for the first time when everyone else does. Now that we have that meaningless self-plug out of the way. Let me tell you. I was so glad I watched this alone. I cried, so hard! Max Jenkins, the young actor portraying, J.J. did a phenomenal job! If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out. It’s really good. After 4 seasons, this show still gets it right, to me. There is love, drama, suspense and the occasional comic relief. With only 3 episodes left, I can only imagine what cliffhanger they will leave us with to ponder over the hiatus. The writers, directors, cast and crew continue to do an excellent job. Chicago Fire is definitely in my,Top 5! (And I am not just saying that because I still want a job for Season 5 and beyond)

Last one for this week

Now you know I had to talk about my favorite show. Limitless!! The second part of the season finale did not disappoint. As of this post,I still don’t know if they have been given the go ahead for a 2nd season. I can’t for the life of my think of why they wouldn’t. I mean, 2 Broke Girls is still on the air. Anyway, the finale tied up a few loose ends and left a few dangling. Brian finally found Piper and he got a “forever immunity shot.” The bad guy Sands was shot but not killed. And, Senator Morra was nowhere to be found, leaving us lots of great opportunity for a Season 2 story line. Are you listening to me CBS? I need you to do the right thing with this show and keep it on the air.

NEXT POST PREVIEW: I’ll be giving you my preview of, Captain America: Civil War.

TV Reviews

I have got to do better. I have been so inundated with work, class, homeschooling, and the fact that I am a grandma now, that I have neglected my blog. I am shamelessly behind in my movie reviews. So today I am switching gears and doing television reviews.

First up, Empire.

Empire appeared on the scene like a megaton of fireworks. It was loud, bright, crazy, and gave you so many,”aaah moments”. This season,  I am searching through the embers trying to find a spark somewhere. It started out okay, but after a dreadfully long break, it returned very sluggish. I have not been impressed with the writing this year. It is totally predictable. And,I haven’t been thrilled with the songs either. Truthfully, the best thing going for them this season is the Freda Gatz character, played by Bre-z. She is a force to be reckoned with. With the other artists, It is as if they hope you are mesmerized by the music and pray you don’t actually listen to the lyrics. Which for the most part have been sophomoric and boring. I still have hope that it can turn around. Especially with the tease that Lucious’ mother might not actually be dead. Which would be weird in itself since Lucious said he watched his mother shoot herself in the head. Anyway, I hope they get it together. I miss the energy and excitement of Season One.

Next up, The Blacklist

WOW! WOW! WOW!  I used to watch this show only sporadically. But, I make sure I watch it weekly now. The Blacklist stays exciting and this season just tripped me the heck out with the “death of Elizabeth Keen.”  Of course, I have my own theory about this. I don’t think she is actually dead. I think they found an ingenious way to give her time to enjoy her pregnancy. As far as her character, I believe they staged her death to give her and the baby a chance to be safe from Reddington. They hinted at this a bit in last week’s episode. I loved that this episode was so different than any other one they have ever shot. SPOILER ALERT!! (even though you should have seen it by now)  I figured that Red was dreaming, but there were moments that I wasn’t sure he was. It had me going all until he asked her her name.  I’ll leave it at that. I can’t wait to see if my theory is correct and also to see how they bring her back. Because Elizabeth has to come back!! James Spader, as Raymond Reddington continues to amaze me weekly. Blacklist remains strong in Season 3, and is definitely in my top 5.

Last but not certainly not least, Limitless

I LOVE THIS SHOW! Limitless, is by far my favorite show this season. The energy of this show is infectious. Jake McDorman has broken out the gate and taken us all on crazy, wild ride as Brian Finch. A below average Joe who “sees the light” when he is given the drug NZT which makes him the smartest man in the room.  Because of his new found abilities, he is helping out the FBI.  If you saw the original movie, (with the same title) You would know that the movie itself was pretty awesome with the title character of Edward Morra played by Bradley Cooper. Cooper has a recurring role on this show and is also of the show’s producers  This spin off from that movie has all the elements. Comedy, Drama, Espionage, with just a touch of Sci-fi. It is fresh, innovative and definitely what I believe has been missing off of network television for a very long time. You never know from week to week what you’re going to see. Will it be cut-aways to cat videos? Will Brian be seriously trying help the team to solve a murder,or will they totally turn the world on its’ head and switch up all the words in the dialogue to cute and cuddly speech so as to not offend Brian’s overloaded senses. (Actually happened in Episode 13 ) I hope that CBS realizes the amazing show they have, and gives Limitless the green light for a second season!

Well, that’s all for today Ladies and Gents. Let me know what some of your favorite TV shows are this season.
