My Magnificent 7 Movie Review

My brother and I decided to take our mother on a “date”. It had been quite a while since it was just the 3 of us. Life gets so busy. And, with my brother and I both having spouses, grown children, teenagers and pre-teens, we stay on the go. We decided to take a break out of our hectic lives and take our mom to check the Magnificent 7. She is a long-time fan of Westerns and she loves Denzel Washington. Then again, who doesn’t love Denzel? I, on the other hand, am not a big fan of Westerns. I have a few that I like. Silverado and Tombstone, but that’s it. So, I wasn’t as interested in seeing it. But, I too am a fan of Denzel and I also wanted to see what the phenomenal director, Antoine Fuqua was going to do with this remake. I wasn’t surprised that the movie was excellent. My mother remembers the original with Yul Brynner and she really enjoyed this one. I think maybe even more than the first one. The one thing I noticed about this movie is that it didn’t waste any time. There were no lulls. It started off with a bang and ended with one. There were light-hearted moments and some moments that made us laugh. One scene,( I won’t spoil it for you) had me almost cheer out loud. I don’t get the chance to see too many movies in the theater, but I am glad I went to see this one. If you get the chance to see it. Please do. Being a writer/actor myself, I am always looking at sets, at the movements the actors make, and how scenes are set up. However, with this movie I was so engrossed in the story being told that I just let myself be whisked away for 2 hours and 13 mins. My 14 and 12-year-olds want to see the movie and I had to see if I felt they could watch it. There really wasn’t anything in the movie that they haven’t seen already as far as the gunplay, the arrows and the occassional axe. But, you might want to leave children under 12 at home. Not many curse words (a few in Spanish) and thankfully not as much gratuitous blood spatters as I expected. It is violent though. It’s a Western. Have you ever seen a non-violent Western? Than being said. If you enjoy a great Western or just very well acted movies, you will enjoy The Magnificent 7.

PG-13 Starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Haley Bennett,Vincent D’Onofrio, Peter Sarsgaard, Lee Byung Hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Martin Sensmeier Running Time: 2h 13mins
